LG has developed a new telephoto camera component for smartphones that beats DSLR cameras. The new feature will be unveiled at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LG said in a press release yesterday. The new feature allows users to zoom in on images and videos from long distances without losing quality.
LG explains that the new zoom lens will adopt similar telescopic functions as a DSLR camera. It delivers crisp image quality even when switching to the 4x or 9x zoom ranges. LG Innotech, LG’s electronic components subsidiary, said the company will make a full reveal of the new optical zoom camera at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023.
LG Innotech’s press release explains that the new camera mounts on the back of a smartphone and allows optical zoom while shooting at all magnifications from 4x to 9x using a single camera module. Existing telephoto lenses allow only optical zoom at fixed magnifications.
Smartphones need to be equipped with multiple zoom cameras to shoot high-definition videos at different magnifications. On the other hand, LG’s new camera achieves the same feat in a single module, thus freeing up more space on the phone for other components and improving battery efficiency, the company claimed.
LG has developed a new zoom actuator, the camera component that moves the lens to change the focal length, for the new optical zoom camera. The company claimed that the actuator provides more precise and faster zooming capabilities. And the camera module will also support OIS.
Also, LG Innotek claims that its new camera module is thinner than existing modules, thus reducing the infamous camera bump. LG Innotek is currently working with Qualcomm Technologies to develop software for the optical telephoto zoom camera module, which includes features such as autofocus, auto-exposure, auto white balance, and lens shading correction.
The new camera module may come to flagship smartphones soon. LG will introduce the new component at CES 2023 starting from January 5. Meanwhile, South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solutions said on Monday it plans to spend 4 trillion won ($3.1 billion) from this year to 2026 to make batteries for electric vehicles and other goods. The company also said in a statement that efforts are being made to hire 1,800 new employees.
