USB Type-C port will also be made mandatory in India. This move follows the footsteps of the European Union. BIS brings new standards.
Following the European Union’s decision to make USB-C chargers mandatory for all electronic devices, India is moving towards a similar move. The government is discussing plans to introduce uniform charging ports in smartphones, laptops and tablets launched in India. As part of this, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) brings new standards.
Why the same charger?
Keeping in mind the convenience of consumers and with the aim of reducing e-waste, the Consumer Affairs Department is asking for products with the same type of chargers to be brought to the market. The European Union has given similar reasons for making USB Type-C mandatory. The European Union argues that this change will bring about positive changes in environmental protection. Two charging standards have been considered for electronic devices in India. It is not clear when the law will be brought in this regard. The move of the central government is to implement this in a phased manner so that the users do not face any problems during this change. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said that the European Union has given time till December 28, 2024 to bring the same charging method and India will also give the same time.
Most Android smartphone makers are not opposed to the new rule. Because the devices released by them currently work on the USB Type C port itself. Most of the earphones, laptops and tablets sold in India have a USB Type C port. There are still a few devices that offer micro-USB ports. These companies will soon switch to Type C port. Will it work for Apple?
Apple is the company most affected by the new law. Apple is the biggest phone maker that doesn’t use a USB Type-C port for wired charging. If the company decides to provide USB-C port in iPhones, millions more people will start using this charging method. Lightning cables are currently used in iPhones. Apple claims that the charger is not included in the box to reduce e-waste.
People are waiting to see how Apple will respond to the new EU and India law. Apple may never bring USB-C ports to iPhones, according to indications. There are also indications that Apple will switch to wireless charging technology entirely by the time the new standards come into effect. Apart from iPhones, Apple may bring wireless charging system to other products as well.
Even if Apple is bringing a USB Type-C port, it won’t be present in the iPhone 15 series. The iPhone 15 series will be released next September. The iPhone 16 series, which is likely to be released in September 2024, may feature a Type-C port.
