Social media undermines users' self-confidence

The beauty of many celebrities seen on social media often makes many people jealous. But it is found that posts from friends and relatives make us more disappointed in ourselves than celebrities. The study, conducted by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University and Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Austria, was published in the journal Body Images.

Social media images and the like provide endless opportunities to make yourself feel bad. In effect, it fills individuals with a sense of inferiority, who led the study, Anglia Ruskin University Prof. Veeran Swamy says. This time, 50 people were selected as volunteers and data was collected from them.

The 50 volunteers were 23 years old. Data collection was done every day over a two-week period. Wristbands were also provided to the volunteers for real-time data collection. It was also instructed to continue using social media on normal days. It was instructed to click once on the hand-held device while viewing social media posts of acquaintances and to click twice while checking posts of strangers.

Volunteers were not required to disclose which social media site they were using. Participants in this survey spent an average of 73 minutes of active time per day and 90 minutes of idle time on social media. Studies have also shown that those who spend more time on social media are less confident about their own appearance. The study also shows that the posts of friends and relatives who are directly acquainted with the social media influencers and celebrities fill the individuals with a sense of inferiority.
