Most common types of Whatsapp scams and how you can avoid them

Getting work from home job offers through WhatsApp, Rs 20,000 salary for a day’s work? Are you getting scam messages saying you’ve won the lottery? These messages are meant to steal your money. But let’s see how you can get rid of these WhatsApp scams.

Work from home scams

These types of Scammers send messages in batches to a large number of people. If you respond, you will be asked to create a Telegram account where they will send you tasks. You actually have to pay to get new tasks and the scammers keep sending them while convincing you that you will eventually get paid. But like most scams, the results never materialize and the scammer disappears after a point.

Electricity  Fraud Bill

But instead of redirecting you to an official government portal you are asked to contact a specific number. The electricity board usually informs people when the bill is overdue through automated calls or official messages. They never ask you to call a specific number. So, if any notification like this contains an unknown number, it is a scam. Block that number.

KBC spoofs

American ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ An adaptation of the franchise, ‘Kon Banega Crorepati’ is a super-popular TV game show in India. You may have already heard about it, but keep in mind that the KBC show is in no way linked to cheating. It’s just that scammers are misusing the show’s name.

WhatsApp QR Code Scam 

In India you usually use QR codes to make payments through UPI. But fraudsters can use this to extort money from you. One way to do this is to send texts to people telling them they’ve won something – for example, a cash prize, a QR code. The message will ask you to scan the code, pay a certain amount and receive the money. But instead of receiving money, you will actually be paying the scammers.
